Karen Dunn Lopez, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN
Iowa College of Nursing
Dr. Dunn Lopez, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN is a nationally and internationally known expert nursing informatics at The University of Iowa College of Nursing where she is a Professor and Director for the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical effectiveness. Her vision is to improve health outcomes, by making it easy (and even enjoyable) for patients, nurses and other members of the healthcare team to apply the highest evidence in their health decision making.
Dr. Dunn Lopez’s scientific contributions are in 3 primary areas:
- Design and testing of useable and useful nurse-centric decision support technologies,
- Demonstrating the value of nurses’ contributions to care outcomes using data generated by nurses in the electronic health record,
- Establishing a link between computerized decision support for nurse decision making and patient outcomes.
Dr. Dunn Lopez is a consummate Team Scientists collaborating with a large variety of clinical and engineering disciplines including Medicine, Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy, as well as Data Science to make her impact. She uses a wide variety of innovative methodological approaches in her research and has authored over 65 peer reviewed publications that have been cited over 2,000 times. She has a sustained pattern of external funding that includes the National Institute of Nursing Research, The National Cancer Institute and The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
In addition to Dr. Dunn Lopez’s scholarly impact, she is a well-established nurse leader who blends her scholarly expertise with her professional service. Her leadership journey began as the Chair of MNRS’s Health Systems Policy and Informatics Research Group and progressed to be Chair of the Nursing Informatics Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association, Incoming Chair of Alliance for Nursing Informatics, and the first North American Board Member for Association for Common European Nursing Diagnosis, Interventions and Outcomes.
Title: Technology Augmented Decision Making, Team Science and Shaping the Future of Nursing Informatics Research
Learning Objectives:
Objective #1: Attendees will identify key methods used in contemporary nursing informatics research.
Objective #2: Attendees will be able to articulate the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing research.

Sarah Rossetti, RN, PhD, FAMIA, FACMI, FAAN, FIAHSI
Dr. Sarah Rossetti, RN, PhD is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Nursing at Columbia University. Her research has been funded by NIH and AHRQ and is focused on identifying and intervening on patient risk for harm by applying computational tools to mine and extract value from EHR data and leveraging user-centered design for patient-centered technologies.
She co-leads the CONCERN Early Warning System study which uses AI methods to predict patient deterioration based on nursing surveillance patterns and has been shown to significantly decrease patient mortality, sepsis, and length of stay. She is chair of AMIA’s 25x5 Task Force to Reduce Documentation Burden.
Dr. Rossetti is an experienced critical care nurse, received her PhD from Columbia University School of Nursing, and completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Columbia University’s Department of Biomedical Informatics. She was selected as a 2019 recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
Title: Opportunities for Human-centered, Nurse Driven AI Solutions to Improve Patient Outcomes and Decrease Clinician Burden
Learning Objectives:
Objective #1: To state challenges related to excessive documentation burden that are ripe for AI solutions.
Objective #2: To provide an example of nurse-driven AI research with an impact on patient outcomes.
Objective #3: To identify policy and advocacy work related to nurse-centered AI to reduce documentation burden.
